Q & A from Tigers Online Forum

QUESTIONS FROM MERV JANKE FAN CLUB

Q HOW DID YOUR INVOLVEMENT WITH SPEEDWAY COME ABOUT

BR I was a spectator at old Meadowbank. When Speedway moved to Coatbridge I
stopped going to play Junior Football. I started going to Berwick Speedway and
Norrie Allan was doing second halves so I decided to give it a go and bought my
first bike from John Wilson.

Q WHO WAS THE BEST PROMOTER YOU RACED FOR

BR Jimmy Beaton he looked after all his riders well.

Q DID YOU ENJOY YOURSELF AT GLASGOW

BR Glasgow was my best time ever

Q YOU EVENTUALLY GOT YOUR MOVE TO YOUR HOMETOWN CLUB FOR THE 1979
SEASON. BUT WAS THERE NOT A BIT OF WRANGLING BEHIND THE SCENES
BEFOREHAND.

BR The two promotions could not agree a transfer fee so it went to arbitration and SCB
Settled it.

Q INJURIES ALWAYS SEEMED TO HAMPER YOUR CAREER , DO YOU STILL SUFFER
IN ANY WAY FROM THEM THESE DAYS

BR My shoulder is sore every day

Q HOW MUCH FURTHER DO YOU THINK YOU WOULD HAVE PROGRESSED INJURY
FREE

BR I would have hoped to move to the bigger league but injury held me back

Q WHAT WAS YOUR FAVORITE TRACK

BR Mildenhall was a favorite

Q WHO WAS THE BEST RIDER YOU RACED ALONGSIDE

BR Ivan Mauger at Hull, Brian Collins at Glasgow and George Hunter at Edinburgh

QUESTIONS BY GRASSCUTTER

Q WHERE DID YOU RIDE YOUR FIRST BIKE

BR There were no training facilities in Scotland in the mid seventies so we had to
go down to Crewe speedway, where Charlie Scarborough had a training school
on Saturdays . Then on Sunday across to Stoke where Jack Milne ran his
training school. When I reached a reasonable standard I rode second halves
at Coatbridge on Friday, played junior football on Saturday afternoons and
rode at Paisley on Saturday night ( made for a busy weekend ).

Q HOW MANY CLUBS DID YOU RIDE FOR

BR Firstly, Glasgow Tigers then Edinburgh Monarchs . I also rode for Poole and
Hull occasionally as reserve .

Q AFTER YOU QUIT THE TIGERS WHAT MADE YOU SIGN FOR THE MONARCHS

BR I suppose it was everyone's dream to race for there local club so I signed for
the monarchs !!!

Q WHAT WAS YOUR WORST INJURY IN SPEEDWAY

BR Only one serious injury, a dislocated shoulder . I must have dislocated my
shoulder dozens of times !! If it wasn't for the great doctor Carlo Biagi I
wouldn't have managed to keep going !

Q GOOD FRIENDS WITH POGO COLLINS DID HE HELP YOU ALONG

BR What can I say about Brian Collins ? - He was the first to criticize me at his
training schools at Coatbridge about my machinery, which always let me
down He gave me the opportunity to work with him in his workshop during the
week and taught me the track craft and maintenance skills which I needed
during my career ....

Q WHAT WAS YOUR BIGGEST ACHIEVEMENT IN SPEEDWAY

BR My first biggest achievement was to win the Scottish Junior Championship at
Coatbridge under the watchful eye of Brain Collins . I went on to win the
Bordernapolis which was a great achievement. I was also involved in the
Scottish World Team Cup at Reading, where I rode against the best in the
world.

Q EXETER/POOLE IS IT A KILLER JOURNEY

BR Yes it was a killer journey . The worst was Glasgow Tigers Southern Tour,
Glasgow - Friday night, Canterbury - Saturday, Eastbourne - Sunday, Exeter –
Monday, Weymouth - Tuesday, night off - Wednesday went to Poole speedway
up to Oxford - Thursday back home to Glasgow for Friday night (men &
machinery knackered !! )
