Finished second to Chris Louis in the 1990 World Under-21 Final, with 1999 World Champion Tony Rickardsson in third. He was spotted by Sheffield promoter Neil Machin racing in Australia and he signed for the Tigers. René became the first rider from the old Soviet Union to race for a British club. Failed to obtain a work permit for the following season but returned in 1995 when he married a British girl. Continued to ride for the Tigers until 1998, before joining Stoke in 1999. He spent a loan spell at Hull before a brief stay the with Monarchs before losing his place to Dalle Andersson.
