report from the Scunthorpe Telegraph
SCUNTHORPE Scorpions missed out on taking anything at Edinburgh after the Monarchs turned around the meeting in the last three heats.
The Scorpions were leading 37-34 but three heat maximums in the last three races from the home side turned the meeting on its head to give Edinburgh a 49-40 victory.
It was a cruel blow for the Scorpions who looked on course for at least a point for most of the meeting.
It was a double blow for the Scorpions as their protest against Edinburgh's 45-44 win at the Eddie Wright Raceway on Sunday was not upheld.
Instead a possible six points has resulted in none and leaves the Scorpions four points off 11th place.
Despite a paid 15 points from Michael Palm Toft, Scunthorpe could not find the necessary firepower to take something from the meeting.
After Scunthorpe lost Sunday's meeting to a 5-0 heat maximum, they ironically started the meeting with one of their own.
Ryan Douglas collided with Sam Masters on the first bend with the race re-run.
Masters led away in the re-run but packed up at the end of the first lap before Mark Riss fell on the second bend of the third lap with the race awarded in the favour of the Scorpions.
Palm Toft was made to work hard for his victory in the second heat pushed hard by both Dan Bewley and Max Clegg but the Dane held on for the win.
Erik Riss won the third heat with Carl Wilkinson doing well to push Ryan Fisher wide and ride a good defensive race to hold on to second.
Kevin Wolbert won from Josh Auty to reduce the deficit to 12-11 in heat four.
The Monarchs then went 15-14 ahead as Douglas was excluded for locking up in front of Fisher, who won the re-run with Scorpions guest Matthew Wethers in second.
Scunthorpe went back in front as Masters went wide after gating which let Palm Toft and Auty through but the Edinburgh number one took second from Auty on the line.
Wilkinson pressured Wolbert in heat seven to take a 4-2 and then Palm Toft and Wethers gated to a heat maximum which put the Scorpions 27-20 up at the halfway stage.
Edinburgh replied with a 5-1 of their own after Erik Riss won heat nine before Masters won a shared 10th heat to keep the gap at three in favour of the Scorpions.
Although Clegg was excluded in the next race, it was won by Wolbert before Erik Riss won to share a third successive heat which saw the Scorpions leading 37-34.
However, that is when it all started going wrong as Wolbert and Masters won easily to put the Monarchs 39-38 in front.
In the penultimate heat Wilkinson fell on the fourth bend of the first lap when chasing the Edinburgh pair and was excluded.
In the re-run Palm Toft gated but was passed by Fisher on the back straight and then Clegg on the line to put Edinburgh 44-39 up.
It guaranteed the Monarchs a victory, providing they had a finisher but denied Scunthorpe the consolation of a losing bonus point.
Wethers was excluded after falling when trying to round Masters and then the Monarchs duo teamed up in the re-run for a 5-1 despite Palm Toft chasing hard.
